#iTrainYouGain Stories: Marketers Grace and Jessie Talk About Leveling Up with a Digital Marketing Certification
At iTrain, we’re not just invested in training, we’re also keen to know our trainees’ career stories and what makes them tick. Grace and Jessie Ng (no relation) are perfect examples of motivated trainees. Both are part of the product and marketing team of Orient Europharma. The duo realized that offline marketing has a limit and today’s marketers need to have an all-encompassing grasp of both offline and online advertising. So they decided to take things in their own hands and capitalize on the digital space.
It started as a self-learning journey, as with most motivated learners. But they didn’t know how best to structure their learning path. Often, for newbies, the large and diverse scope of digital marketing can be overwhelming and trigger choice paralysis! Getting formal training was the only way forward. It wasn’t long before they found iTrain’s Digital Marketing course and decided to become Certified Digital Marketing Specialists (CDMS). Here’s their story.
Self-Learning vs. Structured Learning
Like most organizations, you would have to work within a budget. Grace and Jessie are no strangers to the challenge. To them going online is one of the cheaper ways to reach a wider audience.
With digital marketing, one can make their website discoverable and generate leads. Using the right keywords and search engine optimization, their website will show up when customers search for a product or service. This also means focusing the writing on their pages to include important search keywords that the general public are using.
But knowing what is needed wasn’t enough. According to Grace, “With the right discipline, you can learn the content online. But being part of a course makes learning more organized.” Self-learning forced them to go through a lengthy process of trial and error which was time-consuming. To have everything structured according to a syllabus is advantageous. Especially for any serious practitioner of their craft.
Life is a Game, You Need The Right Tools
When asked what motivates her, Jessie’s answer was thought-provoking;
“Life is a game, you need the right tools to progress to beat the right bosses. You need to collect experience points to get to the next level.”
To her, life is divided into levels to be conquered one by one. Not only is she gaining the necessary tools, but she is also dividing her goals into parts to be accomplished one by one.
“I’m motivated because this feels like an addiction. Problem-solving is an addiction.”
When you view huge tasks in levels, you can envision progress easier. For each new level you conquer, you feel some sense of accomplishment. When you feel affirmed you will want more. Huge tasks then seem less scary.
This is the right mindset to have when undertaking large tasks. To many, being a digital marketing specialist is something alien and distant. But the only reason why is because we tend to jump towards the more complicated end of the spectrum. Here at iTrain we start at the basics and climb up step by step. Learning goals are divided into smaller tasks so they’re less intimidating.
A Sense of Belonging
At the end of the day, no matter how much motivation you may have, it’s the environment that matters. When we asked Grace what motivates her, she said it was a sense of belonging. “As long as I have a happy team that can work together, I’ll do what is needed.”
She explained how she was grateful that her company was willing to invest in her growth. This demonstrated that the company understood how personal growth and satisfaction leads to overall company growth.
An Appeal to Large Companies
We asked Grace and Jessie how best they could apply what they’ve learned from the 5-day CDMS training within their organisation. Both replied that they would require inter-department collaboration and co-operation in terms of linking up with the IT department to integrate analytics, as well as getting permission from their headquarters to do so.
In today’s marketing landscape, marketers can’t work in a silo anymore or they risk losing out on important insights. Any business without digital marketing is like a fish without water. So too is ‘digital marketing’ without access to analytics and the physical sales team.
An increasing number of companies today with large databases have adopted CRM and Digital Marketing Automation platforms that integrate online channels of marketing with analytics and offline sales, to ease and merge the process. These all-in-one super machine learning and AI enabled tools help companies segment their audiences automatically into different groups (e.g., Recurring Visitor, Prospect, 1st Time Buyer Product A, Loyal Customer, etc.) so they can auto-send them more personalised messages, across multiple channels, and track how users move along their sales funnel from merely a website visitor, blog or email reader to a paid customer, among numerous other beneficial uses!
Beyond just sending people to training programmes, it helps if companies back their marketers by granting them critical access to the company’s web analytics plus free reign to make strategic marketing decisions based on the culled insights.
